What Is Final Expense Life Insurance — And Who Is It For
Most people don't think about life insurance until something forces them to. A parent passes away, and the family scrambles to cover costs. A friend mentions they have "burial insurance." A doctor's visit reminds you that you're not as young as you used to be. Whatever brought you here, you're asking the right question.

Final Expense
Final expense life insurance is a type of whole life insurance designed specifically to cover the costs associated with death — primarily funeral and burial expenses, but can also be used for outstanding medical bills, credit card debt, and any other financial loose ends you don't want to leave for your family.
It goes by several names you may have heard:
Burial insurance
Funeral insurance
Senior life insurance
Simplified whole life insurance
They all refer to essentially the same program: a smaller, easier-to-qualify-for life insurance policy built for people in their senior years.
How It Differs From Traditional Life Insurance
If you had a term life or whole life policy in your working years, final expense insurance is a bit different. Here's how they compare:
Traditional Life Insurance | Final Expense Insurance | |
Purpose | Income replacement for dependents | Cover end-of-life costs |
Coverage amount | $250,000–$1,000,000+ | $5,000–$35,000 |
Medical exam | Usually required | Rarely required |
Monthly premium | Lower per $1,000 of coverage | Higher per $1,000 of coverage |
Who it's for | Working-age adults with dependents | Seniors 50–85 |
Approval time | Weeks | Days or same day |
The trade-off is straightforward: final expense policies are easier to get and faster to approve, but the cost per dollar of coverage is higher.
What Does It Actually Cover?
The death benefit is paid to your named beneficiary as a tax-free lump sum cash payment. Your beneficiary can use it for anything; there are no restrictions. In practice, most families use it for:
Funeral and Burial Costs
This is the primary purpose. A full funeral service with burial in Ventura County; can easily run $15,000–$25,000 or more. Cremation is less expensive but still typically costs $3,000–$7,000 when you include a service.
Medical Bills
Many seniors carry unpaid medical bills at the time of death. Even with Medicare, out-of-pocket costs can add up quickly. A final expense policy can prevent those bills from falling on your family.
Outstanding Debts
Credit cards, personal loans, or even a small remaining mortgage balance. A policy can help your family settle these without financial stress.
Everyday Expenses
Some families use remaining funds to cover living expenses during the weeks after a death, when they may need to take time off work to manage arrangements.
Who Is Final Expense Insurance For?
Final expense insurance isn't for everyone. Here's who it makes the most sense for:
✓ Seniors Ages 50–85
This is who final expense makes the most impact for. Most insurance carriers offer coverage to applicants between 50 and 85, with some going up to 89.
✓ People Without Existing Life Insurance
If your work or term life policy has expired, or you never had life insurance at all, final expense coverage fills a real gap.
✓ People Who Don't Want to Leave a Financial Burden
Even if your family is financially comfortable, a death creates unexpected costs and logistics. Many people purchase final expense insurance simply out of consideration, so their children or spouse don't have to dip into savings or deal with financial stress while grieving.
✓ People With Health Conditions Who Can't Qualify for Traditional Life Insurance
This is where final expense insurance really shines. Because most policies require only a short health questionnaire (and some require nothing at all), people who have been declined for traditional life insurance can often still qualify.
✓ People on a Fixed Income
Final expense premiums are fixed for life, they never increase. For someone on Social Security or a pension, knowing exactly what you'll pay every month matters.
Who It May NOT Be Right For
✗ People Who Still Have Dependents Relying on Their Income
If you have children at home or a spouse who depends on your income, you likely need a larger traditional policy in addition to, or instead of final expense coverage.
✗ People Who Already Have Sufficient Coverage
If you have a whole life policy or enough savings set aside to cover your final expenses, you may not need an additional policy.
✗ Very Young, Healthy Adults
Younger adults in good health can get far more coverage per dollar through traditional term or whole life insurance. Final expense insurance is priced for age and risk, it's not efficient coverage for a 35-year-old.
How Does the Application Process Work?
One of the biggest appeals of final expense insurance is how simple and quick it is to apply.
Step 1: Talk to a professional
We recommend working with an independent broker who will ask you some basic questions about your age, health history, and what you're hoping to cover. This takes 30 minutes and costs you nothing.
Step 2: Choose a policy Based on your health and budget, your broker will recommend one or more policies from different carriers. You choose the coverage amount and carrier that works for you.
Step 3: Answer health questions (if applicable) Most policies require a short set of yes/no health questions. No blood draws, no doctor visits. Some policies (guaranteed issue) require no health questionnaires.
Step 4: Get approved Approval can happen the same day or within a few business days. Once approved, your coverage is active and your premium is locked in for life.
How Much Does Final Expense Coverage Cost?
Premiums vary based on your age, gender, health, the carrier, and the coverage amount you choose. To give you a general sense:
Age | Gender | Coverage Amount | Estimated Monthly Premium* |
60 | Female | $15,000 | $45–$65 |
60 | Male | $15,000 | $55–$75 |
70 | Female | $15,000 | $75–$95 |
70 | Male | $15,000 | $95–$120 |
75 | Female | $20,000 | $110–$140 |
75 | Male | $20,000 | $140–$175 |

A Note on Independent Brokers vs. Captive Agents
When shopping for final expense insurance, who you work with matters as much as which policy you choose.
A captive agent works for a single insurance company and can only offer that company's products. An independent broker is contracted with multiple carriers and can shop the market on your behalf, helping you to find the best coverage at the lowest rate.
In the final expense market, premiums for the same coverage can vary by 20–40% between carriers depending on your health profile. Working with an independent broker costs you nothing extra and often saves you money.
